James Loney was resigned earlier today by the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3 year $21 million contract. Loney, 29, is coming off a strong rebound year in which he slash .299/.348/.430. Always known as a good defender at first base, it was a pleasant surprise for the Rays last season when he also contributed with the bat. Loney still hasn't displayed big power like many of the better first basemen in the game, but Loney will hit for a little better average then most other first basemen. Loney's WAR of 2.7 last season was a career high, and not much more than that can be expected from him moving forward. He should hit for an average around .300 with 10 or so home runs. If Loney hits like he did last year, this will be a solid deal for the Rays, who will enjoy having an everyday first baseman, but if he regresses like he has before, it could be a tough 3 years for both the Rays and Loney as he doesn't have the power to fall back on like most other first basemen in the league. Loney is a good fit within this team and the Rays will be excited to have him back. Should end up being a solid deal that could always turn sour depending on Loney's bat. Only time will tell whether of not it was a good deal.
