In addition to signing Corey Hart earlier today, the Seattle Mariners have acquired Logan Morrison from the Marlins for pitcher Carter Capps. Morrison has been mentioned in trade speculation many time over the past few days, and it looks as of the Marlins were finally able to find someone to take him off their hands. Morrison, 26, has been somewhat underwhelming for the Marlins who have been waiting for him to take a step forward these past few years. In almost 1500 major league plate appearances, Morrison owns a WAR of -0.1. Much of this has to do with his below average defense in left field and at first base. Once a bad defender in left, Morrison didn't improve much on his move to first these past two years either. He does still have some power in his bat, and is still only 26 so the Mariners are taking a chance that he can get even better. The move to the American League will also be very welcoming as he now can slide into the DH spot as well as being a back up plan if Corey Hart can't come back well from his knee surgeries.
The other half of this deal, Carter Capps, is a 25 year old right handed pitcher who struggled in his first taste of the big leagues last season. Even with an ERA over 5 last year, his 10.1 k/9 last year is really promising. He has got some heat on his fastball and could be a good addition to a slightly underrated Marlins bullpen this next year.
