After adding Josh Johnson earlier in the winter, the Padres have made another high profile addition to their pitching staff today with the addition of Joaquin Benoit on a 2 year $15.5 million deal. Benoit, a 36 year old right handed pitcher, spent last year with Detroit and was rather effective when handed the closer job halfway through the year. He pitched to a 2.01 ERA and racked up 24 saves in 67 innings pitched. With the money that they are paying him in San Diego, there looks to be a chance that he could take over the closer's job from incumbent Huston Street, though Street had a decent year as well last year. If he doesn't close, Benoit will then become one of the best setup men in the game, which will be valuable in and of itself. Benoit should be able to put up quality numbers again just like he has done throughout his career, and he will definitely help improve the San Diego bullpen. With Benoit being a righty, the Padres are reportedly still on the lookout for another lefty bullpen arm, even after landing lefty Patrick Schuster in the Rule 5 Draft last week.
