This is the moment we've been waiting for baseball fans! There was finally a trade, and it looks to be a pretty impactful one at that! Mark Trumbo was sent from the Angels to the Diamondbacks along AJ Schugel and a PTBNL, who sent Adam Eaton to the White Sox, who in turn sent Hector Santiago to the Angels. The Diamondbacks also sent Tyler Skaggs to the Angels. This trade will significantly affect each of these teams going forward, and this trade could eventually end up helping each of their respective teams going forward. Lets take a closer look at this blockbuster deal.
The Angels most likely brought this trade up by actively shopping Mark Trumbo in the market. The Diamondbacks looked like a potential suitor from the start as they had just what the Angels were looking for on the market young, controllable pitchers. throughout the day the Angels were rumored to be in on either Tyler Skaggs, Trevor Cahill, or both. Eventually they settled on acquiring Tyler Skaggs from the D'Backs and Hector Santiago from the White Sox for Trumbo, AJ Schugel and a PTBNL. Tyler Skaggs is a 22 year old lefty who you may remember as being sent from the Angels to the D'Backs in the Dan Haren trade. He has been a perennial top prospect for the D'Backs, but has struggled as of late, especially in the majors. He pitched to a 5.12 ERA in nearly 40 big league innings last year. He should rank decently in the Angels' top prospects this upcoming year which is just as much about his potential as it is about the lack of the Angels' minor league depth. He should get ample opportunity this upcoming year to prove himself in the majors and could end up being a good pitcher for the Angels moving forward. Hector Santiago on the other hand, has some decent major league experience on his hands. The 25 year old lefty really came on last year and pitched to a 3.53 ERA in 149 major league innings. He made 23 starts in 34 appearances, and looks to be a good major league starter. A fly ball pitcher, he will no doubt enjoy having Mike Trout in center moving forward. A 2.8 WAR in only 23 starts last season. Santiago could very well reach 5 with another good season of 30 plus starts. The Angels got exactly what they wanted out of this deal, dealing from their strength clearly paid off.
In order to receive Mark Trumbo from the Angels, the Diamondbacks sent Tyler Skaggs to the Angels and Adam Eaton to the White Sox. Although they were dealing from two positions of excess, it was still a steep price to pay for Trumbo. Skaggs could very well develop into a quality starter and Eaton has the tools needed to one day become a perennial all start. Trumbo's power would fit well in any line up, and pairing him with Paul Goldschmidt could create the next Cabrera-Fielder combination in the middle of the order, but Trumbo doesn't get on base all that well for a power hitter and is a terrible defender. What makes it worse is that as a National League team, Trumbo can't be used at the DH position, and with Goldschmidt at first he can't be played there either. Trumbo will be stuck in the outfield, which doesn't help their young pitching staff one bit. AJ Pollock in center is a decent defender, but he isn't fast enough to make up all that much for Trumbo's lack of speed. I want to think that Trumbo's power will far outweigh his defensive losses, but one down season could create a black hole in the outfield in Arizona. Without other ways of getting on base, and any sort of glove, the D'Backs need Trumbo's power to show up for this trade to be of any sort of benefit to them. Schugel is a minor league starter who struggled in triple-A last season but pitched well in double-A the year before. He will most likely develop into a back of the rotation starter in the bigs, but he will need some more seasoning in triple-A this upcoming year.
The White Sox were a late addition to the Trumbo trade rumors, and ended up swapping pitcher Hector Santiago for outfielder Adam Eaton. As I mentioned earlier, Quintana is a young, quality pitcher who could even improve a little bit more. Quintana was a hefty price to pay in this trade but who they received from the D'Dacks has a chance to be a real prize. Adam Eaton, my own personal favorite player in this trade, is a 25 year old centerfielder who is good at just about everything. He is quick enough and a good enough fielder to play center on the Sox, and could very well become a 20HR guy. Before his preseason injury, he was slated to become the D'Backs opening day leadoff hitter too so he can get on base. Eaton has everything needed to become a star in centerfield and should be at worst a starting outfielder. He will be a clear upgrade over De Aza in center. Usually I am not a supporter of swapping a quality starter for an outfielder, but in this case I think the White Sox did well. If Eaton transitions well he could end up being the best player in this entire trade, and that's saying a lot.
Overall, I think the Angels won this trade and the White Sox finished a close second, but they could move up depending on Eaton. I think this deal was ok at best for the D'Backs, and for Arizona fans, just hope Trumbo hits.
