In what could be viewed as a somewhat surprising signing, Corey Hart signed earlier today a one year deal with the Mariners. Hart, 31, has immense power, judging by his average of 32.6 HRs from 2007-2012. He missed the entire year in 2013 after requiring surgery on both of his knees. Make no doubt that this is a gamble for the Mariners, as knee surgery on both knees is hard to come back from. If Hart is able to come back from his injuries and play the same way he was before, the Mariners will have one of the best signings of the winter under their belt. If not, Seattle will only lose the one year that they committed to Hart. Hart represents a gamble, but a good gamble for the Mariners. He has the potential to be an All-Star this year for them, and yet is salary will representative of a player much less than that. This is a low risk/high reward signing for the Mariners and I like it a lot better than the Cano deal for example. The confusing thing about this deal for me is why Hart chose to move to Seattle as opposed to staying in Milwaukee. It could be because he feels that he could have a better chance to win there, but he was quoted earlier this fall saying he would take a pay cut to stay in Milwaukee. I have a hard time believing that Milwaukee's offer was all that much less than Seattle's, especially since it was only a one year deal. Either way, Hart is now a Marine and for the sake of baseball we hope he fully returns to his old form.
