Earlier today, Brain Roberts agreed to a one year/ $2 million deal with the New York Yankees. On the surface this looks like a low risk second base filler that could help the Yankees if Roberts can stay healthy, and I have similar but slightly different view of this signing. For only $2 million, I think the Yankees are getting one of the biggest steals of the offseason. When he’s healthy, Roberts can be one of the most dynamic second basemen in the league. There aren’t all that many, if any at all, bench guys that can do what Roberts can do. As a switch hitting second baseman, he can hurt both lefties and righties along with a little pop and speed on the base paths, and the Yankees are getting all of this for a bench level salary. What’s even more important is that he fills the Yankees’ last current offensive void. Add a good hitting Roberts to a stacked lineup and it makes their line up possibly the best in the league. Even if Roberts only plays 77 games like he did last year, this deal was a steal as he can contribute when he’s healthy, and yet they still have enough money to spend on other 2B options as fill ins. At this point in free agency, it’s hard to find possible starters without paying absolute top dollar, and the Yankees just did that. Love the deal, and Roberts will contribute to a very successful Yankees team in 2014.
