Bartolo Colon is now a member of the New York Mets. Just a few hours ago he agreed to a deal that will pay him $20 million over two years. Colon, who is now 40, pitched well last year for the AL West Champion A's. Even with a somewhat diminishing velocity and decreasing K/9 rates, Colon has utilized excellent command to continue to be a very productive pitcher. He is coming off a season in which he was an All-Star, pitched to a 2.65 ERA with a 5.0 WAR, and finished 6th in the AL Cy Young voting. The Mets will become Colon's 10th career team, and this will be his second stop in New York, having spent 2011 with the Yankees. Anticipated to sign a one year deal, this signing comes as a bit of a surprise to many considering Colon's old age as well as the young pitchers who will need time in the big leagues to properly develop. A one year deal would have been more appropriate, especially for the Mets, but because of Colon's ability, if he wanted two he got two. I am kind of wary of this deal only because I don't think Colon can put up numbers like he did last year but overall this deal makes the Mets better next year and because of that it was
