And now it finally feels like the winter meetings are here. The A's and the Rockies just struck a deal that will send Brett Anderson to the Rockies for Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen. The A's have been rumored to be shopping Anderson all week and it seems they have finally found the right offer. Anderson has been in the league 5 years already but is only 25 years old. He had been a very highly regarded prospect with legitimate ace potential until injuries derailed his career. He has shown flashes of potential the past couple of years, but those flashes were always interrupted with injuries. He missed a portion of 2013 with a foot injury, and when he did play the results were pretty, with an ERA north of 6. He is under control for 2 more years at $20 million which isn't all that much if he pitches well and stays off the DL. The Rockies definitely bought low on this deal shipping two young pitchers to the A's. The first, Drew Pomeranz, is a former Indians top prospect who was shipped to Colorado in the Ubaldo Jimenez deal. Upon arriving in Colorado, Pomeranz hasn't quite lived up to his top prospect status. He hasn't spent a great deal of time with the big league club, but when he has he hasn't been all that great with a career ERA of 5.20. The A's are most likely going to try to bring him back to his old potential while still getting out of a somewhat bad contract. The second pitcher, Chris Jensen, is a single-A non prospect who was merely average last year. Shouldn't make an impact, but who knows, weirder things have happened. If Anderson pitches well and doesn't get hurt this is a huge steal for the Rockies, and if not its not a huge loss. Good deal for the Rockies.
